Yes, America is Already Great
Let’s skip for the moment the proudly ignorant people who can’t accept that the White House was IN FACT built by slaves. Why did the First Lady of the United States of America mention that fact?
Simple. That historical FACT demonstrates how this country, Modern America, is a BETTER place than colonial America.
The Founding Fathers articulated a beautiful idea: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.†They failed that ideal. Slaves building the White House proves that they failed because slaves did not control their lives, their liberty or their happiness.
Modern America has made great strides to embrace that ideal. The Civil War ended legalized slavery. The Civil Rights Movement outlawed government legislated racism.
How does Mrs. Obama know these things viscerally? She, a black woman, descendant of slaves, wakes up in the White House. She wakes up not as a slave or a maid. She wakes up as the First Lady of the United States of America.
The First Lady knows that this is not a perfect country. But she can say without a doubt that America is a Great Country.
